Tetramethylammonium chloride Usage

Tetramethylammonium chloride is a phase transfer catalyst for organic synthesis. Its catalytic activity is stronger than that of triphenylphosphine and triethylamine. It is a white crystalline powder at room temperature. It is volatile, irritating, hygroscopic, soluble in methanol, soluble. In water and hot ethanol, insoluble in ether and chloroform. It is decomposed into trimethylamine and methyl chloride by heating to above 230 °C. Half lethal dose (mouse, abdominal cavity) 25 mg/kg. Also used in the synthesis of liquid crystal epoxy compounds, polarography and pop analysis, the electronics industry.
